News :

A Shocking new study examining 36 top most-bought protein powders in India has highlighted issues with product quality, label accuracy, and the veracity of marketing claims associated with these popular supplements.

Detailed Matter :

Published in the journal Medicine, the study reveals inconsistencies in these products, which frequently include components like vitamins, minerals, and other natural or synthetic substances in addition to proteins. Such supplements are typically utilized for muscle building and to supplement dietary protein needs with a lean, pure source of proteins and amino acids.

The findings indicate that about 70% of the analyzed supplements displayed incorrect protein content on their labels, with some brands providing only half of the claimed amount. Moreover, approximately 14% of the samples were contaminated with harmful fungal toxins known as aflatoxins, and 8% contained detectable pesticide residues.

The researchers called for rigorous oversight and thorough safety evaluations before these protein-enriched herbal and dietary supplements are sold. They noted a significant gap in the proactive and comprehensive examination of such supplements, particularly those that are protein-based.

Risk of Using Unregulated whey Protein:

While global research and clinical data highlight the risk of organ damage, notably liver injury from herbal and dietary supplements, this study points out the specific lack of similar research on protein supplements.

The study underscores the challenges regulators face and the critical importance of consumer rights to access clear and reliable information when selecting safe food or supplement options.

Govt Take on the Issue :

In related news, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya reported to the Lok Sabha last August that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had initiated numerous civil and criminal proceedings in 2022-23 regarding non-compliant food samples, including those involving protein powders and dietary supplements.
