Silver lyre from Ur Royal Cemetery, southern Iraq, 2600 BC.
This magnificent silver lyre was played 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Music was an important part of many celebrations and rituals in ancient Mesopotamia. The lyre is made of silver and red limestone. The frame, tuners, and strings are modern replicas made from molds of rotten wood pieces. Ornate panels below the bull's head show a fallow deer and a tree at the top, a lion attacking a goat, and another lion attacking gazelles.
